There was a whole draft written up for part two, which was supposed to include a short list of modifications, a shakedown day at either Winton or Broadford and then a plan for the next round of modifications, budget, etc. Fast forward many month’s in various stages of COVID-19 restrictions and all those plans have been unhappily torpedoed…select all, delete.
It’s not all doom and gloom however as the stock SR20DE has had the once over. At time of purchase this car was significantly cheaper than an S15 Spec-R variant, the main reason being the N/A motor however the car also comes with a 5-speed gearbox that differs marginally to the S14’s and at the end of the powertrain there is an open diff rather than the S15’s helical.
While the exact differences remain a mystery, what is known is that the SR20DE motor has a marginally higher 9:1 compression ratio, uses a distributor cap and lacks oil squirters in the bottom end.
While in lockdown Ray at RE Motorsports has wired in a Link ECU and converted the motor to hall-sensor. Added to this are the factory Australian turbo (non ball-bearing) and a conversion to E85 fuel with flex sensor. Supporting modifications include oil cooler, catch can, Greddy intercooler, R35 coilpack conversion, Bosch 1000cc injectors and Walbro 255. All up the car now makes 211kw at the rear wheels at roughly 65% ethanol mixture. Instead of adding a whole bunch of gauges the original dash cluster has been replaced with a Link / AIM MXG display.
The next stage will be to get all the handling components in and with a little luck squeeze in a track day before the end of the year.
